The poncho of chastity

30 Jun

When is crochet too much crochet? I think that if you move out of scarf territory, things can begin to get dicey.

I have a special spot in my heart for crochet, ever since a strange encounter I had in central park a few years ago. During the summer, I was in New York to look at grad schools and weep over how expensive they were, when I decided to walk from NYU to Columbia through the park.

Fancying myself some sort of Canadian wilderness expert, I cut off through the brush, bushwhacking to create what I thought was a short cut. It was, in fact, a path directly to the heart of crazy.

After about half an hour of wading through the forest, a swarm of mosquitoes parted in front of me to reveal a clearing. By a river, there stood a man, a woman, and a cat on a grocery cart. All around them, trees were festooned with an intricate network of coloured string and crochet doilies. The man and the woman were wearing head-to-toe rainbow crochet jumpsuits, complete with hats, and so was the cat.

They seemed not to notice me, and I slowly backed away.

I know what you’re thinking: Cool story, Pinfuriating. But what does this have to do with Pinterest? As I once got lost in central park, I frequently get lost on Pinterest. I click on a pin, then the original pinner, cruise through their boards, when suddenly:

An image of a crochet poncho in fall colours over cordoroy panks.

I find myself deeply immersed in the world of crochet again… Sometimes, even macrame.

The word fashion is used quite loosely in the crochet community. What really makes this outfit? It has to be the matching bag. Can’t wear one without the other! It kind of needs a hat, though, right? Where are the matching hat and pants?

Both items look like they belong back in the seventies, shudder, shudder*, ugly and dated, why would anyone, just why? By the way, love the story of the man, woman and cat, hahahaha, I can’t imagine…too funny and scary at the same time.
